Why Mushrooms are Having a Moment
Share
'Mush love' is exploding right now and with good reason. In the kitchen, mushrooms are revered as the best natural alternative to meat; high in bioavailable proteins, balanced amino acids, natural vitamin D and rich in gut healthy fibre. They make extraordinary steaks, with bite!
But mushrooms are way more than just food. Mushrooms are medicine. In fact many of our pharmaceuticals are derived from compounds found exclusively in fungi.
The humble fungus belongs to a kingdom unto itself. With potentially as many species as there are plants and herbs. With long established healing properties that we westerners are just beginning to learn for ourselves. At Lion & Bear, we've select the preeminent leaders of the mushroom realm; rigorously studied and with a long history of use.
The Future is Fungi
Mycelial innovations are solving some of the world's most pressing problems and have been shown to impact every one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With projects ranging from Construction materials, biodegradable packaging, water purification, biological computing and many more.
Growing mushrooms can be done anywhere in the world, with little space, time and resources. Mycelium can be trained to digest even the most resilient pollutants from cigarettes, hydrocarbon oil spills and even nuclear waste.
We are Fungi
The explosion of innovators utilising fungi isn't by coincidence, but rather design. Fungi were made for us. Why? Because, of our shared lineage. Fungi, share a closer genetic heritage with humans than plants, making many of their medicinal compounds, more easily adopted by the body and more complex in their outcomes.
The world we live in today was shaped by fungi who inherited it, long before we did. By forming symbiotic relationships with plants millions of years ago, they enabled the green and plentiful lands that allow us to exist.
Fungi live in and on each and every one of us. On our skin, right down to our microbiome. We coexist in a delicate balance with fungi and as we seek to understand the nuances of our health and wellbeing, so we will need to better understand the health and wellbeing of fungi.
We specialise in working with fungi for its staggering potential to help heal our planet and our people.
